Report on Familiarization Trip of Philippine Travel Companies

From June 12th to 16th, we invited nine travel companies from Manila, the capital of the Philippines, for a familiarization trip. Most visitors to Japan from the Philippines are members of the upper- or upper-middle class, so we focused on the food, culture, and sightseeing resources of Kansai that would suit those travelers’ tastes for the travel companies’ trip planning. We introduced unique and interesting attractions of Kansai (Osaka, Shiga, Fukui, and Kyoto) to them.

Although it was the first time for all of the participants, they were deeply interested and passionately participated in making soba noodles and papermaking in Echizen, Fukui. The Japanese instructors also were surprised at how quickly they picked up the techniques and how skillful they were. Also during our trip, business meetings were held with local tourism-related businesses in Osaka, Fukui and Shiga. In these meetings, opinions and information were exchanged actively. From these exchanges, we proposed new routes for sightseeing besides the typical places and routes known as “Golden Route”.

The Foundation for Kansai Region Promotion will continue to assist these businesses and conduct promotion and marketing efforts to attract visitors from the Philippines to Kansai.
