Wakayama Adventure World—No.1 in the zoo sector in the “2012 Ranking of Zoos and Aquariums that Pleased Visitors”

TripAdvisor, a Japanese subsidiary of TripAdvisor®, operating the world’s largest word-of-mouth website on travel, announced the “2012 Ranking of Zoos and Aquariums that Pleased Visitors.” In the zoo sector, Wakayama Adventure World took first place, surpassing Asahiyama Zoo in Hokkaido, which topped the list for the two previous years.

Wakayama Adventure World, a comprehensive theme park with a vast site area of 800,000 m2, houses not only the Safari World, but also a play zone and a marine world where dolphins perform. Famous for breeding nine pandas (*1), the largest number of pandas bred in facilities outside China, the park is one of the leading tourist spots in Japan. Its website receives many comments that value the park, stating, “Twin pandas were so cute,” “The park was very enjoyable, even for adults,” and “I was able to see animals at close range.”

In the Kansai region, several parks ranked in the Top 10, in addition to Wakayama Adventure World. Kobe Oji Zoo (Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture) ranked fourth in the zoo sector. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan (Osaka City, Osaka), Toba Aquarium (Toba City, Mie Prefecture) and Futami Sea Paradise (Ise City, Mie Prefecture) finished sixth, seventh and tenth, respectively, in the aquarium sector.

(*1) On Aug.10, a baby panda was born. She is now open to the public and visitors can observe the baby and her mother through glass.
