Community Dance Program “Dance 4 All 2012”

Dance 4 All is a community dance program held at Kyoto Art Center that began in 2009. Many people especially local residents, kids or adults, have participated in this program regardless of their age and dancing experience to experiment with the latest contemporary dancing styles. The purpose of this program is to vitalize the local community by making full use of the power of dance together with artists, based on the assumption that anyone can create and participate in community dance regardless of their experience, age, sex or physical condition. A total of more than 130 people have participated in Dance 4 all and created dances. They got together at Dance 4 all and have worked on new dance expressions and co-creations with extensive communication with each other.

Mika Kurosawa, a dance choreographer, will direct the performance this year. Workshops are scheduled once a month from September 2012 to February 2013 and intensive practices are planned from mid to late March 2013 at Kyoto Art Center. The workshops will be facilitated by either Mika Kurosawa or Tamami Yamada, a Kyoto-based choreographer, every other month.

In addition, a community dance symposium with people involved in the project and participants across the country will be held. This is considered to be an important opportunity to develop Dance 4 All further and plan future community dance programs in Japan.
