The 1300th Anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo Capital

 The 1300th Anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo Capital is being held across Nara Prefecture. The anniversary has gained momentum with over 2 million visitors coming to the main venue of the Heijo Palace site by August 23. Ushering in autumn, the anniversary has reached its climax. On October 8 (Fri), the “Commemorative Ceremony of the 1300th Anniversary of Nara Heijo-kyo Capital” (in the image) will be held in the front courtyard of the former Imperial Audience Hall (Daigoku-den) on the Heijo Palace Site. Welcoming privileged guests from both Japan and abroad, the ceremony will be held to commemorate and show appreciation to the history of Japan from its establishment to the present day and to send a message of friendship & exchange for the future to Japan and overseas as the “Heijo-kyo Declaration.” (Only guests will participate in this event.)
 From October 9 (Sat) until November 7 (Sun), an autumn fair, “Heijo-kyo Fair,” will be held. Visitors can see various events: “Reproduction of Ancient Events,” an event that presents Imperial events and entertainment in the Nara period (710-784) with an modern arrangement; “Sumai-no-sechie” an event where ancient sumo wrestling, originally conducted as a national ritual, is reproduced (Oct. 10); “Jarai” an event where archers hit the target in quick succession (Oct. 24); “Umayumi” an event where archers shoot arrows from horses running at full speed to hit the target (Oct. 31); “Kemari” a sport in which ancient aristocrats kick a leather ball (Nov. 6); “Gokusui-no-en” a banquet where ancient government officials compose tanka poems by a pond (Oct. 9, 11, 16, 17, 23, 30, and Nov. 3) (observation free of charge). In addition, the “Tempyo Tea Ceremony” (photo) will be held daily, where visitors can enjoy “dancha”, which is created from Yamato-cha, Nara’s specialty tea, through a tea production method 1,300 years old. (A 20-minute tea ceremony with Japanese confectionary costs 500 yen).
