Kasuga Wakamiya Onmatsuri

This is an annual celebration held by Wakamiya shrine, which is the subordinate shrine of Kasuga Taisha shrine.

It is said that this festival was begun in 1136 at the end of the Heian Period by Fujiwara Tadamichi to pray for a bountiful harvest. In the wee hours of December 17, the divine spirits of Wakamiya are transferred to Otabisho (a temporary sanctuary), near the first torii gate. Visitors can enjoy traditional performing arts such as Kagura, Bugaku, Dengaku and Seino.

This festival is designated as an important intangible folk cultural asset.
