Saikusa Matsuri Festival (Yuri Matsuri Festival)

The name of the Saikusa Matsuri Festival originated from the classical Japanese name of bamboo lilies, or saikusa, which are picked at the head shrine Miwayama and displayed on the sake barrels of Shiroki-Kuroki (literally, white sake and black sake). This is a long-established Shinto ritual continued from the reign of Emperor Mommu (701 to 703). The worshippers compete with one another in trying to get the lilies which were offered to the shrine, because the lilies are considered charms against epidemic diseases. It is also referred to as the Yuri (lily) Matsuri Festival.
