SAIL OSAKA '97 assembles 60 tall ships

Sixty vessels from 17 countries and one area will participate in SAIL OSAKA '97, the Hong Kong-Osaka tall ship race scheduled to begin the end of March, the City of Osaka announced December 12.The application deadline expired November 30.
The regatta will be called in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the modern port of Osaka.The event program will include a parade of all the 60 ships in Osaka Bay.
Competitors will be divided into three groups, depending on the size of the vessel.Of Class A, the category for large tall ships, the 3,675 ton Libertad of Argentina is the largest.The Dar Mlodziezy of Poland, the Pallada and the Nadezhda from Russia, the Gloria of Colombia, the Nippon Maru and the Kaiwo Maru from Japan and four other ships also belong to this class.
The participating ships start in Hong Kong March 28 to sail 2,700 kilometers to Osaka with ports of call in Okinawa and Kagoshima.A parade from the waters off Hannan Port in Osaka Bay to Osaka Port will take place on April 29.
