Construction work starts on Osaka Int'l Convention Center

Construction of the Osaka International Convention Center (tentative name) began December 17 in Nakanoshima, Kita Ward.The center was planned by Osaka Prefecture, the City of Osaka and local business groups to be the core convention facility for the next century.It will have 13 stories above ground and three underground levels with a total floor space of some 67,000 sq. meters.
The center will feature a 400-seat special conference hall capable of handing international conferences attended by VIPs and a 2,754-seat convention hall with changeable seating and stage layouts to accommodate a wide variety of meetings.The conference hall will be housed from the twelfth to thirteenth floors, while the convention hall will occupy the fifth to ninth floors.The halls will be equipped with an eight-language simultaneous interpretation system and wide-screen projectors.An additional conference room and 24 meeting rooms will be built on the tenth and eleventh floors.The third and fourth floors will be dedicated to an event hall.
The 10-company construction group includes Takenaka Corp., Obayashi Corp. and Fujita Corp.The$B!o (B57 billion center is scheduled to open in the spring of 2000.
