Two chefs from Kusatsu City, Shiga win Gold and Bronze at the Culinary Olympics

Two chefs of two hotels, both located in Kusatsu City, were granted a gold medal and a bronze medal, respectively, at the biggest international culinary competition, the Culinary Olympics, held in October 2016 in Germany.
With a history of more than 100 years, the International Exhibition of Culinary Art, dubbed the Culinary Olympics, is the world’s most prestigious international competition, taking place every four years in Germany. Last year, more than 2000 chefs from over 30 countries competed in the event. Among them were 13 chefs from Japan.
In the Individual Exhibitor Category, Masaru Tsunogaki (59), the master chef at Hotel Boston Plaza Kusatsu, scored a gold medal, and Kenta Kasamatsu (38), a chef de partie at Kusatsu Estopia Hotel, gained a bronze. While Tsunogaki created tapas and a full-course dinner under the theme “Elegance of Kyoto,” featuring octopus and quail, Kasamatsu expressed his theme “Japan” by combining traditional ingredients of Japanese cooking such as yuzu citrus fruit and myoga ginger with Western cuisine.
Tsunogaki said, “I want to develop the next generation so that more and more chefs from Shiga can compete on the world stage.” Kasamatsu expressed his hope by saying, “I would like to tell young cooks what I experienced in the competition.”
