Kyoto ranked second best city in the world—its highest ranking ever—in a survey by a U.S. travel magazine

Readers of an American travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveler—arguably one of the world’s most reputable travel magazines—chose Kyoto as the second most attractive city in the world (excluding the U.S.) in 2016. This is the first time Kyoto has ranked second in this survey.
The main readership of the magazine is affluent individuals living in North America. Launched in 1987, the monthly magazine has a circulation of approximately 800,000. Each year it announces its rankings of the world’s cities, hotels and airlines, among others, based on the votes of its readers. In the best cities in the world category, Tokyo ranked first (15th in 2015) and Florence (Italy) third (first in 2015). Kyoto made the top ten for the first time in 2015 and moved up to second spot this year.
The magazine describes Kyoto as one of the most historical and traditional cities in Japan with nearly 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines and almost 100 Michelin-starred restaurants. It mentions kaiseki Japanese cuisine which “changes seasonally” and is available in Kyoto—the former imperial capital of Japan.
Kyoto was also voted the most popular city for travelers for two consecutive years in 2014 and 2015 by the readers of another American travel magazine, Travel+Leisure.
The number of international overnight visitors to Kyoto in 2015 grew 73% from the previous year to a record high 3.16 million. The number of overnight visitors from the U.S. also rose 86% year on year to a record high 320,000. This demonstrates a rapidly growing interest in Kyoto in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world in recent years.
