Nitto Denko Develops World's First Magnetic Field Orientation Controlling Neodymium Magnet

 Nitto Denko Corporation (Osaka City) has developed a neodymium magnet that is capable of controlling magnetic field orientation.
 The neodymium magnet is a type of rare-earth magnet primarily composed of neodymium. As a powerful permanent magnet, it is used in motors for various products, from small electronics such as hard disk drives and mobile phones, to trains, automobiles, and robots. The current neodymium magnet, however, does not control magnetic field orientation, and motor performance has reached a plateau.
 This new neodymium magnet is produced by being bent after adding special organic materials to fine powder of neodymium alloy, thus enabling control of the magnet field orientation and increasing the magnet’s power by 20 to 30 percent compared to that of conventional magnets. The neodymium magnet also increases motor torque, which contributes to further miniaturization and lightweight manufacture of motors. The technology used for the sintered neodymium magnet is the first in the world that can control magnetic field orientation.
 The company will commercialize the neodymium magnet for the first time, planning to ship sample products in FY 2016, and then go into mass production and fully launch in FY 2017. The company aims to generate annual sales of 10 billion yen, fostering the business as a pillar of its new field.
