KIX begins construction of its LCC exclusive terminal

Kansai International Airport(KIX) Co., Ltd. recently held a ground-breaking ceremony for Japan’s first exclusive passenger terminal for low cost carriers (LCCs).
The new terminal, to be built on the second phase airport island, will be a steel-framed one-story building (except for one area) with a total area of about 30,000 square meters, whose design focus
is “functionality,” “economy,” and “security & safety.” The terminal, which will be shared by both domestic and international carriers, will be equipped with a hardstand for nine aircraft. Without any escalators, elevators or boarding bridges, users will board their planes using a ramp. The terminal is pursuing economy with a simple design.

At this airport, flight services are currently provided by five LCCs, such as Jetstar (Australia) and Cebu Pacific Air (Philippines). At the scheduled time of opening in autumn 2012, Peach Aviation, one of ANA Japan’s affiliates, which will newly launch services in March 2012, will use the new terminal as its base.
As competition between airports in Asia is intensifying, KIX, using its strength of 24-hour availability, aims to create new demand with low air fares by actively inviting LCCs, which are expected to be a pillar of its development strategy.
