Kumano Sankeimichi Iseji Path is a pilgrimage route passing along the east coast of the Kii Peninsula that connects Kumano Sanzan and Ise Shrine. The latter is the shrine where the Sun Goddess Amaterasu-Omikami is worshipped. From a reference in a journal written by a pilgrim of the time, it is assumed that the path was already an established pilgrimage route by the late 10th century. About 34 km of the entire 160km route remains as either stone paving or bare hardened earth still preserved in good condition.
