Environmental Technology Research Organizations in Kansai

UNEP, IETC

In order to contribute to the conservation of the global environment and the improvement of environmental technology, there are many research organizations specializing in environmental issues located in the Kansai region, such as the United Nations Environment Programme International Environmental Technology Centre (UNEP IETC) (Osaka and Shiga), the APEC Virtual Center for Environmental Technology Exchange (APEC VC) (Osaka), and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Kansai Research Centre (IGES) (Kobe).

UNEP IETC was established in order to make use of the rich experience gained in advanced countries in regard to environmental preservation and make that technology and knowledge accessible to the developing countries, and the organization has offices located in Osaka in Ryokuchi Koen of the Tsurumi ward and Kusatsu City on the edge of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. The Osaka office is responsible for "general environmental management in metropolitan areas" and the Shiga office is in charge of "environmental management in freshwater and marsh districts."
APEC VC is an important organization engaged in the resolution of environmental issues in the Asia-Pacific region, including global warming. Through the exchange of environmental technology gathered by countries, regions, autonomous bodies enterprises and environment-related organizations within the APEC region, the project is aiming to contribute to the improvement of environmental technology and the conservation of the environment.
Based on the environmental conservation technology and administration methods developed when Japan was forced to confront environmental pollution issues during the high-growth period in Japan, the International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (ICETT) in Mie Prefecture was established in 1990 in order to further technological exchange with the various developing countries facing present environmental issues, and thus to contribute to global environmental conservation. The establishment of the organization was realized by Mie Prefecture and Yokkaichi City, with both local governments spearheading the movement, along with the cooperation and support of a wide variety of organizations.
