In Kansai too, a similar rail pass, the Kansai Passport, is available for overseas tourists. This pass enables travelers to use various transportation services in specific areas in the Kansai region at discount rates for a specific period. They are very popular among travelers who visit Japan for a short period.

When you ride a train, you can pass through an automatic ticket gate simply by quickly placing your IC card on the gate’s reader. You can also get on and off buses just by placing the card on the readers. There’s no need to take a number ticket or worry about coins when riding a bus.
There are two types of IC cards: the PiTaPa card, which is a postpaid card (you pay the fee later), and the ICOCA card, which is a prepaid card that you can recharge at JR stations.
