Adding abrasives to
the water and using a reinforced nozzle enable the water cutter to cut iron. This
also helps to make the device more compact.

K.K. Wing, located in Hanoura Town in the south of Tokushima Prefecture, has,
together with The Anan College of Technology and other groups, developed and patented
a new device it calls a water cutter. The device, which can be operated nonstop
for 500 to 600 hours, is used to cut a variety of materials. Wing received a subsidy
from the prefecture as part of the prefectural government's effort to promote
business startups. In 1997, Tokushima Prefecture boasted the third highest amount
of startup investment in the country, and definite results have been obtained
as can be seen in the increasing numbers of new technologies developed and persons
employed at corporations receiving funding.
