Traditional Architecture
in Kansai Region

OSAKA Prefecture

Jinai-machi, Tondabayashi City
(Machiya in jinai-machi)

All of Osaka's historic buildings were built in and after the Kamakura Period except the Taho-to Pagoda of Kongoji Temple. Buddhist temples are built mainly in the Japanese architectural style. Shinto shrines built in the Medieval Period are mostly of the nagare-zukuri style, which is a variant of the gabled roof style, but others are in the kasuga-zukuri style, which shows the influence of the architectural style of the Nara Period. Other local architectural characteristics include an abundance of strong decorative elements, such as Chinese gables on eaves or triangular chidori gables on roofs. By comparison, many tea houses built in Sakai during the Medieval Period feature wabi sabi, a rustic simplicity. As for minka, many large houses still survive, and through them we see the prefecture's history of wealthy farmers and village headmen.
